Misting Fans vs. Misting System

Are you confused about which type of outdoor cooling system you should buy? Misting Fans? or Misting System? Portable Misting Fans or Permanently installed Misting Fan that oscillates? Here are a few questions you should ask before you make your purchase.
  • How big is your entertaining area?
  • Measure your entertaining area, if the area is deeper than 20′ misting fans are a great idea. Misting fans will move the air and provide the necessary cooling at the same time. Misting fans tend to work better when you don’t have a patio cover. The misting fans cool the air and project the mist further than a standard misting system.
  • If your entertaining area is less than 20′ deep, then a misting system may be more appropriate for your space. When the misting system is installed on a solid patio cover you can surround the area with misting lines and create a curtain of cool air. To achieve this effect you will need to place the stainless steel lines on all open sides of the patio. This will create a curtain like effect and prevent any hot air from entering the patio.
What type of environment do I live in?
  • If you are living in a hot, dry climate like Southern California, Arizona, Nevada and parts of Texas then a standard misting system is what you are looking for.
  • If you live in a humid or tropical environment like, Florida or Mexico then a misting fan is better suited for your needs. Again, having the air moved around provides better cooling for these areas.
Do you have a covered or open patio?
  • If your seating/entertaining area is an open aired patio with no cover, you want to purchase a misting fan. Again, you want to project the mist along with positive air flow. No amount of mist will cool the open area without some type of air flowing through.
  • If you have a solid patio cover or even a patio structure with open lattice, a misting fan is more appropriate. However, if you don’t surround all open areas with mist, it will do no good in cooling the area.
Some patios may require both a high pressure misting system and a misting fan. Some large, deep commercial entertaining areas (areas over 50′) such as restaurants or outdoor bars have both. This is because there is a patio structure, however the perimeter misting may not be enough to gain cooling in the center of the patio. So a misting fan is added. A few good local examples of large commercial entertaining areas would be similar to Babes at the River in Rancho Mirage, Las Casuelas in Palm Springs or Fishermans in Palm Desert and La Quinta. A number of auto service centers like Americas Tire and Discount Tire have installed misting fans. This increases productivity and keeps their employees comfortable. A number of Auto dealerships have also installed misting systems to keep their potential customers happy. Lets face it, when you live in an area that sees temperatures of 90+ you have to do what you have to do to stay cool. Sometimes swimming in the pool isn’t enough.
