What kind of misting nozzles do I need?

How do you know which size misting nozzle you need for your misting system? The size of the water droplets that make up the mist helps determine how much cooling effect you’ll be able to feel. Larger water droplets take longer to evaporate than smaller droplets.  If they land on you before they’ve completely evaporated, you’re wet. If you’re in fairly dry air this can feel wonderful. On the flip side, it can be miserable if it’s humid out. Another issue you want to take into consideration is your patio furniture. You dont want to choose a nozzle that produces so much mist it gets your patio furniture wet, or puddles on the ground which can lead to accidents.

When you choose a smaller nozzle the smaller droplets evaporate mid-air. This is called “flash evaporation”  and gives a much better cooling effect. Also, smaller water droplets can spread or “drift” more than larger droplets, cooling a larger patio or entertaining area. Below is a sample of water droplet sizes based on common nozzle sizes using a 1000 psi commercial misting pump. We measure droplet sizes in “microns” (1 micron is .001mm).
