Service your misting system

Did you service your misting system yet? Do you want to have it done and save money at the same time? Do you consider yourself a handy kind of guy? No problem. If you are considering servicing your misting system on your own, here is a step by step guide on how to do it properly, including how to change the oil on your misting pump. 1. Turn system on and make a visual inspection of the misting system.
  • Turn misting system on. In some cases the switch may be on your patio, on a remote, inside on your wall panel or simply on the misting pump itself.
  • Let pump pressurize to somewhere between 700-1000 psi. Depending on your setting. We recommend 900 psi.
  • If the pump pressure is low and won’t reach 900 psi there may be a leak causing loss of pressure, worn out pump head or too many nozzles may be running for that pump head.
  • Take a walk under the stainless steel misting lines and look for leaks, check out the nozzles and make sure all of them are there and none have blown off. Make a note of any clogged misting nozzles that may need to be replaced. Make sure you don’t see any leaks at the connection points.
  • Inspect all incoming and outgoing hose connections. Check the hoses for weathering
  • Inspect the filter housing. It should not be leaking.
  • Inspect all electrical connections.
  • If you see leaks, or weathering make a note of it. You will most likely need to replace these parts.
  • Shut misting system off.
2.Cleaning the misting nozzles.
  • Use a wire brush to clean off all calcification prior to soaking the nozzles. If you don’t have a wire brush it’s ok. Soaking the nozzles usually does the trick.
  • Next, soak the nozzles in Modern Misting Systems nozzle cleaner for about 10-20 minutes. Do not spill the solution as it will stain concrete, clothing and patio furniture.
  • While the nozzles are soaking in the solution we can move on to the pump service.
3. Changing the filters.
  • The following is true for 10″ filters and 5″ filters.
  • Turn water off to system, then turn the system on for 2-4 seconds and shut off immediately. This will purge the back pressure out of the filter housing, making it easier to remove the filter housing.
  • Using a Modern Misting Systems filter wrench slide the filter wrench over the blue filter housing and turn clockwise to remove.
  • Remove 10″ filter or 5″ filter from housing and rinse the housing thoroughly. If you see any slimy build-up wipe clean prior to adding a new filter.
  • Check the black O-ring on the top of the filter housing, making sure it is seated inside the groove.
  • Remove wrapping from new filter and place inside housing.
  • Screw the filter housing in a clockwise direction, tightening into the black lid.
  • Turn misting system back on to check for leaks. If water leaks between the housing and the black lid, you may not have gotten the filter housing tight enough and caused the O-ring to slip out of its seat. Shut the system off, loosen housing and reset the O-ring. Re tighten.
4. Changing the oil in your misting pump.
  • You will need a small flat plastic container to fit underneath the misting pump and a large crescent wrench to loosen oil cap. And a funnel to help pour oil into pump
  • If your system has bolts holding the cover on, you will need to unscrew these and remove lid.
  • Place plastic container underneath pump head.
  • Loosen black drain cap from the underside of the pump head and allow oil to drain out into the plastic container. Take note that there is a black o-ring that should have come off with the drain cap. If it is not on drain cap, it may be stuck to the bottom of the pump head or fallen into the used oil. You must have this o-ring when reinstalling the drain cap or you will have a leak.
  • Wipe pump head clean with a rag and re install drain cap on bottom of pump head in a clockwise rotation.
  • Remove red cap from the top of the pump head and insert funnel. Pour your new Cat Pumps non-detergent 30 weight oil into pump until oil covers the red dot on the site glass located on the very front of the pump head. If the oil is under filled it can cause damage to the misting pump. If the oil is over filled it will leak out of red cap and create a mess on your concrete.
  • Place red cap back on pump head, tighten in a clockwise direction.
  • Dispose of oil per your city guidelines. DO NOT POUR OIL INTO DRAINS.
5. Installing cleaned misting nozzles.
  • Agitate misting nozzles to remove any build up
  • Rinse misting nozzles with water, if nozzles still have heavy build-up a second soaking might be necessary.
  • Turn misting system on to allow water to flush through lines. This will clear out any build up or foreign matter inside the stainless steel lines.
  • Shut misting system off.
  • Starting at the first nozzle closest to the pump start reinstalling nozzles. Make sure the nozzles are screwed in properly to the stainless steel risor. If there is a gap you will have an o-ring leak. Once all the nozzles have been installed, turn the misting system back on.
  • Walk the lines and make another visual inspection checking for any leaks or clogged nozzles. Also re check the pressure.
  • If you have clogged nozzles you will need to purchase new ones here.
